The key with managing consultants is to understand the rules —
and then get them to play by your rules!
Over the past 35 years I’ve been a consultant and a major buyer of consultants. I have worked for or with (as a client) most of the big name consultants, many boutique consultancies and a number of individual consultants.
I’ve seen it all from both sides — good and bad consultancies, good and bad consultants and good and bad consultancy management.
And I can tell you that consultants are better organized to get money out of you than you are organized to get value out of them.
That is why I wrote this Guide and eBook — to put
YOU in control.

Many aspects of the “How to” Guide are the result of my own experiences — successful and unsuccessful — of being both a consultant and a buyer of consultants. You can learn from my 35 years of experience.
The Guide will help you understand and successfully govern management consultants. It is part of a series of Programs and Guides to all of the dimensions of business outcomes delivery. (Go to www.valuedeliverymanagement.com for details of our full list of programs and guides.)
To get the best from consultants involves active control, direction and support.
The key words here are ‘active’ and ‘control’ as effective consultant management is not just a review and oversight process.
It is a process that is continuous and directly impacts the results achieved.
Responsibility for consultants is usually shared by the Project Sponsor (who approves their use) and the Project Manager (who directly supervises their performance). Both parties need to understand their roles and the processes required to get the best out of the consultants. I take you through the end-to-end consultancy management process, step by step.
To help you understand the issues and challenges involved, how consultants operate and their performance drivers —you really need to read “Consultants.CON” — it’s an entertaining, amusing and informative ebook.
The most shocking aspect of this book is that all of the stories contained in it are true!
I strongly recommend you read this ebook before taking on any consultants.
Previous readers of the ebook found it“Interesting, amusing and very helpful” and
it changed their focus on consultants
so as to get the most value in the shortest time.
Here’s to putting you in control of all consultants — including the biggest in the world!

Dear Friend,
The most frightening aspect of this topic — managing consultants — is that it is so poorly done by so many organizations.
Not surprisingly, there are not a vast number of consultants out there teaching you how to manage consultants!
But there is one — me.
It is not difficult to harness the value of consultants. If you’re going to use them, use them effectively. My “How to Manage Consultants Guide” takes you through the end-to-end consultancy management process and tells you how to get them to perform for you.
First you need to understand how consultants think and operate. This is described in entertaining style in our ebook “Consultants.CON.”
It is written as two interleaved scenarios — the Managing Partner of a fictitious international consultancy answering questions from new recruits, and an ex-strategy consultant now CEO answering questions from fellow CEOs.
This ebook reveals the secrets of consultants — many of which you may have suspected, but now you’ll know for certain. Some will be new to you.
You’ll learn how to combat their agendas and superimpose your own, and how to adjust your behaviour to extract maximum value from each consultancy assignment.
Once you understand what you are dealing with you can establish your consultancy policies — who can buy consultancy, why and how. I give you a list of recommended policies.
Then you need a consultant selection process. Just going for a ‘brand name’ consultancy may be seen as low risk, but can also be very low value (while being very, very expensive).
But, before you even think of whom you will retain, you need to ask yourself why you even need a consultant, what they are being asked to do and how they’ll be measured. You need to get your business needs in order — and I tell you how.
When you then go to select your consultancy you need ask some key questions — which I provide.
What you want to avoid is ‘pre-packaged’ answers when you’re asking specific questions and consultancy teams whose only relevant qualification for the task is that they are available.
Then, once on board, you need to manage their performance (and their fees)! Someone needs to be accountable for monitoring their performance throughout the project and assessing the results generated.
You also need to evaluate the consultancy’s overall performance — is this one of their areas of strength or weakness? Would you employ them again? We give you the management processes to put in place and the dimensions to measure.
When you are using consultants you need to be in control. If you leave them unfettered you’ll pay for it in more ways than one. You’ll find cost overruns, substandard results or results that weren’t what you wanted.
Selecting and managing consultants is a process that every organization needs to have in place and working well. “How to Manage Consultants” enables you to put in place practical processes, fast.
With the money most organizations spend on consultants, anything that helps you get better control and receive greater value from consultants must be worthwhile. And my Program will cost you less than one-hour’s consultancy fees.
